Sanctuary Zambezi Kulefu Camp guide Alick Zulu and guests recently spotted a very unusual bird on a sandbank of the Lower Zambezi River. The sighting had everyone confused as they consulted their bird books, all eventually agreeing that the bird was the rare Eurasian Oystercatcher.

This bird is a rare visitor to Southern African coastlines between October and February. What makes this such a special sighting is that it has never been recorded inland in Southern Africa! Trevor Hardaker, a Southern African expert on rare birds, confirmed it was in fact a European Oystercatcher and that this was the first time ever in Southern Africa that the bird had been recorded away from the coast. What a fantastic sighting to finish the season in the Lower Zambezi with.

Sanctuary Zambezi Kulefu Camp will open again on 16 April 2011.
